Diwali Holiday Security: How to Protect Your Shop, Factory or Warehouse While You’re Closed

Diwali falls on Sunday, 8 November this year, and for most Indian businesses that means the longest closure of the year. Shops pull the shutter down after the last festive sale. Factories stop the line and send workers home. Warehouses lock up with shelves full of stock that was bought in for the season. Owners travel, staff go to their home towns, and whole markets and industrial estates go quiet for days. It is the best week of the year for your family, and the most exposed week of the year for your premises. Here is what to do before you lock up, and how to make sure someone is still watching while you are away.

Why the Diwali Closure Is the Riskiest Week of the Year

On a normal night your premises is empty for eight or ten hours. During Diwali it can be empty for four, five, or more days in a row, and several things line up against you at the same time.

  • Stock is at its peak. You bought heavily for the season, and whatever did not sell is sitting inside.
  • Cash is at its peak. The last days before Diwali bring the year’s biggest collections, often after the banks have closed.
  • Everyone knows you are closed. The closure dates are on your shutter, your WhatsApp status, and your Google listing.
  • Your neighbours are closed too. The shop next door, the unit across the lane, the chowkidar who normally notices things: all away.
  • Your regular guard is on leave. Many sites run on a replacement guard, a reduced team, or nobody at all.
  • Noise is normal. With firecrackers going off through the night, the sound of a shutter being forced does not stand out.

The people who break into shops and godowns know all of this. They also know something else that matters even more.

During a holiday, nobody finds out for days:

On an ordinary night, a break-in is discovered the next morning when someone opens up. During the Diwali closure, it can be four or five days before anyone walks back in. That gives a thief all the time they need, and it means that by the time you file a complaint, the stock has been moved, sold, and is long gone. Your cameras will have recorded all of it. Nobody will have been watching.

Before You Lock Up: A Diwali Closing Checklist

An hour spent on these on your last working day removes most of the easy opportunities.

  • Move the cash. Deposit what you can before the bank holidays start. Do not leave the festive collection in the drawer or the office safe.
  • Check that every camera is actually working. Look at each feed, not just the first screen. A camera that died three weeks ago is the one you will need. Our guide to Video Management Systems explains how a camera health check catches this for you.
  • Check that the recorder is recording. Confirm the DVR or NVR has disk space and that the date and time on it are correct.
  • Keep the power and internet on. Many owners switch off the mains when they leave, which switches off the cameras as well. Leave the recorder, cameras, and router powered, and make sure the internet plan will not expire mid-holiday.
  • Light the outside. Leave exterior lights on at the shutter, the rear door, and the yard. Dark corners are where people work unseen.
  • Walk the boundary. Check rear doors, roof access, ventilators, and side windows, not only the front shutter. Most forced entries come from the side nobody looks at.
  • Account for the keys. Know exactly who is holding a key during the closure.
  • Note your stock. A dated stock record or a few photos of the shelves and godown make any police complaint or insurance claim far easier.
  • Clear firecracker risk. Move cartons, packing material, and anything flammable away from the shutter, windows, and open yard.
  • Leave a reachable contact. Make sure someone who can act, and who is staying in the city, has the numbers they need.

Why Cameras and a Holiday Guard Are Not Enough

All of that makes you a harder target. None of it tells you when something is happening. Your cameras will record a break-in in good detail, and that footage will sit on the recorder until you come back. A camera that nobody is watching is a witness, and a witness cannot stop anything.

A guard helps, but the holiday is exactly when guarding is at its thinnest. The regular man is on leave. The replacement does not know the site. One person is covering a shift that usually has two, on the nights when he would also rather be at home. We have written before about why a guard watching CCTV screens is not the same as monitoring, and during a festival week every one of those weaknesses gets worse.

What Night-Time Monitoring Does While You Are Away

Professional monitoring puts trained people on your cameras through the nights of the closure, so a break-in is caught while it is being attempted and not discovered when you reopen. At Modernext, technology does the tireless first pass across every camera so that nothing is buried in hours of empty footage, and a trained operator looks at whatever seems wrong. A cat on the compound wall or a burst of firecracker light does not take up anyone’s time. A person working at your rear shutter at 2 AM does. The operator confirms it is genuine and a response goes out immediately, while the person is still outside. The incident is documented and reported to you through the Modernext app, wherever you happen to be celebrating.

A night during the closure, end to end: It is 1:50 AM on the third night of the closure. A wholesale cloth trader has locked his godown and taken his family to their home town. The market is shut, the lane is empty, and firecrackers are still going off a few streets away. Two men stop at the rear shutter with a cutter. On a record-only setup, the trader would find out five days later, standing in front of empty racks. Instead, the moment is caught within seconds. An operator confirms these are not staff and that the attempt is deliberate, and a response goes out immediately, before the shutter is open. By morning the trader has a clear record in the Modernext app of what happened and what was done. The stock is still on the racks, and his holiday carries on.

You Do Not Need New Cameras for This

Modernext works with the cameras and the DVR or NVR you already have. A single small device is added near your recorder, using the power and network connection that are already there. There is no rewiring and no replacing of equipment that is working. Your existing setup carries on doing what it does, and it gains the one thing it has never had: someone watching it at night.

Do Not Leave It to the Last Week

The days before Diwali are the busiest of the year for every shop, factory, and warehouse, and security is the job that keeps slipping to tomorrow until the shutter is already down. If you want your premises watched through this year’s closure, start the conversation now, while there is still time to look at your cameras and set things up properly. If you are comparing providers, our guide on how to choose a CCTV monitoring service lists the questions worth asking. Frequently Asked Questions

Why are shops and warehouses targeted during Diwali?

Stock and cash are at their highest, premises stay closed for several days in a row, neighbouring businesses and regular guards are away, and firecracker noise covers the sound of a forced entry. A break-in may also go unnoticed until the business reopens.

Should I switch off the power when I close for the holidays?

Switch off machinery and anything that does not need to run, but keep the cameras, the recorder, and the internet router powered. Turning off the mains turns off your cameras too, which leaves the premises with no record and no way of being watched.

Do I need to install new cameras before Diwali?

No. Modernext works with your existing cameras and DVR or NVR. A small device is added near the recorder using the power and network connection already there, with no rewiring.

How will I know if something happens while I am out of town?

Verified incidents are documented and reported through the Modernext app, so you can see what was detected, when, and how it was handled from wherever you are.

Enjoy Diwali. We will watch the shutter.

Tell us your closure dates and what cameras you have, and we will show you how Modernext would watch your shop, factory, or warehouse through the nights you are away.
